Water immersion
The joint is submerged or repeatedly soaked — a sink of hot water, a dishwasher cycle.
What to do
Working with it
- Ask whether the joint is splashed or actually submerged: most “waterproof” glues survive splashes, and far fewer survive standing water.
- Skip anything water-based on a joint that soaks. PVA re-softens, and a dishwasher cycle finishes it off.
- Epoxy and silicone both hold underwater, but they fail differently — epoxy carries load and cracks, silicone flexes and peels. Pick by which one you can afford.

- Why is occasional splashing different from water immersion?
- A splashed joint can dry between events, while an immersed joint gives water time to enter edges, pores, and tiny defects. Repeated soaking can behave like immersion even when the object is never left underwater continuously.
- Does waterproof on the label guarantee a submerged repair?
- Only when the maker also allows the relevant immersion use. Some waterproof claims cover rain or brief exposure while excluding constant submersion, below-waterline work, or particular substrates.
- Why is hot detergent water harder on glue than clean water?
- Heat can soften the adhesive and move the materials, while detergent helps water wet and enter the joint. Together they challenge the bond in ways a room-temperature splash test does not.
- Should a wet joint use epoxy or silicone?
- Choose by what the joint must do after it gets wet. Epoxy suits rigid load-bearing contact when the product permits immersion; silicone suits a flexible seal, but it should not be asked to carry steady structural load.
