Fix a loose chair rung or spindle

Use PVA wood glue for tight-fitting chair rungs clamped until cured. If the mortise socket is worn loose or wallowed out, switch to gap-filling 2-part epoxy.

Best Glue for This Repair

PVA wood glue

Penetrates raw wood fibers and cures stronger than the wood itself when clamped tightly.

Why PVA wood glue Works Here

  1. Porous and slightly forgiving — glue soaks in, and a well-glued joint ends up stronger than the wood around it. Oily hardwoods like teak need a solvent wipe first.
  2. It soaks into the grain and cures stronger than the wood itself.

How to do it

Fix a loose chair rung or spindle: Step by Step

  1. Carefully separate the loose rung from the chair leg using gentle wiggling or a dead-blow rubber mallet.
  2. Scrape all old, brittle dried glue off the tenon and from inside the socket down to bare wood.
  3. Test-fit the dry joint. If the tenon fits loosely with visible slop, wrap it with wood veneer shims or prepare epoxy instead of PVA glue.
  4. Apply PVA wood glue generously inside the mortise hole and around the tenon end.
  5. Reassemble the chair and apply firm clamp pressure across the legs with a strap clamp or bar clamp until fully cured.

Conditions

When to Use 2-part gap-filling epoxy Instead

Standard PVA wood glue requires wood-to-wood contact under clamp pressure. If the socket has enlarged and creates a gap, switch to gap-filling 2-part epoxy.

Questions

Common Questions About This Repair

Can I just inject glue into the loose chair joint without taking it apart?
Injecting glue without cleaning rarely lasts because fresh glue cannot penetrate through the crust of old, dried glue. For a permanent repair, pull the rung out and scrape both mating faces to bare wood before re-gluing.
What if the chair spindle is loose and wobbly inside the mortise hole?
PVA wood glue shrinks as its water evaporates and has almost no strength across empty gaps. When the tenon fits loosely, use a 2-part gap-filling epoxy or wrap the tenon with thin wood veneer soaked in glue.
How do I clamp round chair legs without specialized wood clamps?
Use a nylon ratcheting strap clamp or tie a loop of strong rope around the chair legs and twist it tight with a screwdriver (the Spanish windlass technique) until glue squeeze-out appears.
Why should I dry-fit the chair before applying wood glue?
PVA wood glue begins tacking within 5 to 10 minutes. Dry-fitting ensures all rungs and legs align square on a flat floor and lets you set your clamp positions before the glue clock starts.
