Comment conserver ses colles pour éviter qu'elles ne sèchent
Astuces simples pour prolonger la durée de vie de vos tubes de colle entamés et éviter de les jeter au bout de deux semaines.
The cost of crusty nozzles
Most homeowners throw away up to 80% of every bottle of glue they purchase. You buy a tube for a two-minute repair, put it on a garage shelf, and discover six months later that the tip has crusted over or the entire bottle has cured solid.
Different glue families dry out or cure through completely different chemical triggers. Storing them all the same way guarantees waste. Here is the exact playbook for each type.
Polyurethane glue & silicone cartridges
- Polyurethane glue (Gorilla Glue): Cures from trapped oxygen and ambient moisture inside the bottle. Before tightening the cap, gently squeeze the sides of the plastic bottle until the liquid rises all the way to the very top edge of the nozzle, expelling all internal air. Cap it while maintaining the squeeze so the bottle stays dented.
- Silicone cartridges & caulking tubes: Plastic wrap and electrical tape always fail over time. Instead, deliberately squeeze out a 1/2-inch bead from the nozzle tip after you finish, and leave it alone. The exposed bead will cure into a solid rubber plug that seals the wet silicone inside. When you need it next time, simply grip the rubber plug with pliers and pull it out in one piece.
Wood glue (PVA): Keep it away from winter freezing
Standard yellow wood glue (PVA) does not cure from air — it dries by evaporating water into the wood grain.
- The freeze-thaw danger: Never store PVA glue in an unheated garage or shed through a freezing winter. If the water inside freezes, the emulsion breaks permanently into a useless cottage-cheese-like sludge that will never cure strong again.
- Cleaning the pop-top spout: If the cap gets crusty, pull the blue or red nozzle assembly off entirely, soak it in a cup of hot tap water for 10 minutes, and pop the dried ring out with a toothpick.
Contact cement: Seal against solvent evaporation
Contact cement cures by flashing off volatile chemical solvents into the air. If the metal can does not have a 100% airtight seal, the solvent evaporates, leaving a thick honey-like sludge.
- Wipe the metal rim clean with a rag and a dash of mineral spirits before hammering the lid shut.
- Place a layer of heavy plastic wrap across the can opening before hammering down the lid to prevent the metal lid from welding itself permanently to the rim.
